What is an Energy Information System (EIS)? Designed by the Latin American Energy Organization (OLADE) under the guidance of the Caribbean Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (CCREEE), the EIS is a custom-built tool for gathering and processing energy sector data and information.
Why Do We Need An EIS? The data collected by the EIS will help to upgrade and develop CARICOM's energy sector by enhancing energy statistics, planning and management. It will allow for a better understanding of energy balances and sound preparation for the region's future energy needs creating a more stable and affordable energy supply for everyone.
How is the New Energy Information System (EIS) Being Rolled Out? Launched on July 1st, 2021, the project began with an analysis of CARICOM's individual energy sectors completed jointly with the CCREEE and the CARICOM Energy Unit. Based on this analysis, OLADE tailored the EIS specifically to the region's unique needs. CARICOM energy professionals will now be trained in data collection, statistics management, energy planning and modelling using our new EIS, which will be housed within the CARICOM Knowledge Hub.
What About Up-And-Coming Energy Professionals? The CARICOM Energy Unit and the CCREEE are working with OLADE to see that training on the new EIS can be offered at regional universities, providing a pathway for future energy professionals to learn the new tool.

The Regional Energy Efficiency Strategy and Action Plan (REES & REEAP) The flagship project of TAPSEC’s energy pillar, the REES and REEAP emerged out of an awareness of the need to develop regional energy efficiency by creating a strategy and an action plan to serve as a guide for regional and national organisations to upscale energy efficiency. “We developed 15 country strategies — what we call a country potential — for each of the 15 CARICOM countries. Integrated Utility Service (IUS) Pilot Programme The IUS pilot programme aims to create utility-based energy service companies that offer energy efficiency solutions directly to their customers. They provide upfront financing, allowing customers to benefit from immediate reductions in their electricity use and costs and customers then pay for the solutions over time through their electricity bills. “It's a win for the utility, it's a win for the consumer, the landlord, the renter and the technology service provider because we now have a sustainable framework where utilities are getting customers that they wouldn't have had access to before. We are piloting this in four different countries with different energy environments, different types of legislation and regulation, and different utility structures. The Regional Electric Vehicle Strategy (REVS) Framework Developed by the Caribbean Center for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (CCREEE) with support from TAPSEC, the REVS framework focuses on boosting regional electric vehicle uptake by creating a framework that any CARICOM country can use to implement the strategy. “We decided to do four application examples and one case study. We wanted to cover the different types of island infrastructure that exists in CARICOM, and do application examples for them. CARICOM Policy and Regulations Help Desk The result of a partnership between TAPSEC and the CARICOM Secretariat, this first-of-its-kind facility provides CARICOM Member States with technical assistance in the creation and maintenance of sustainable energy policies and regulations. “We decided, ‘why not develop a help desk that will act as a facility for CARICOM member states to be able to submit requests for technical assistance?’ It's such a rich resource in terms of meeting countries where they're at and filling in the gaps so that they can get to where they want to go. ”

AN ILLUMINATING LOOK AT THE EVOLUTION OF LIGHTING The history of lighting is grounded in the pursuit of innovation and energy efficiency. While the invention of electric light was evolutionary in how it changed the way we live, the way we work and the way we power our world, the nature of electric lighting itself has gone through several revolutions since its invention more than 200 years ago. 1803-1809 The first arc lamp was created by Humphry Davy was powered by batteries and two charcoal rods. Many city streets were lit by arc lamps. 1877-1885 Inventors all over the world competed to create an electric incandescent lamp. Thomas Edison worked his researchers to improve the filament, patenting an incandescent bulb with conson Tementin losu. 1901-1939 The mercury-vapour lamp, a precursor Tuorescent lighting, was developed in 1901 by Peter Cooper Hewitt. He created a blue-green light by passing an electric current through mercury vapour. By 1934, researchers were working on phosphor-coated tubes and by 1939, fluorescent lamps were on display at the World's Fair. 1951 Driven by a need for energy efficient lighting at war plants during World War II, fluorescents became the most popular light source in the US. 1962 The very first Light Emitting Diode (LED) was invented by Nick Holonyak Jr. Red was created first; yellow and green diodes were next, blue and white came years later. 1976 The first spiral Compact Fluorescent Light (CFL) bulb was created by Edward Hammer as a reaction to rising oil prices and a strong need for energy efficient bulbs for households. 1978 LEDS begin appearing consumer products, specifically calculators and indicator lights. 1985 The first CFL bulbs hit the market with a cost of $25-$35 USD. 2002-2008 The first residential LED bulbs nit the monket, Most were equivalent to 25-40 watts. 2007 Cuba became the first country in the wore te pnose out incandescent bulbs, banning their import and sale while implementing a replacement programme substituting them About 116 million bulbs were replaced in Cuban household, creating peak demand savings of 4.000 MW one coreon emission reduction of eight million tons. 2011 The first LED replacement emerged. 60-watt 2012 More than 49 million LED products were installed in the US, saving $675 million USD in energy costs. 2013 The cost of a CFL bulb dropped to $1.74 USD. They used 75% less energy than incandescent bulbs and lasted roughly 10 times longer. The cost of LED bulbs also dropped by more than 85% since 2008, selling for under $10 USD. 2015 As of the shift to phase-out incandescent bulbs, CARICOM Ministers set energy performance stoneeres for efls and LEDs, protecting consultes and the market from inefficient products.

LIGHTING ENERGY EFFICIENCY & COST SAVINGS LEDs: The Bright Choice Lighting technology has come a long way in the more than 200 years since the very first incandescent lamp was invented. Today, we have more options than ever before to light our lives, but when it comes to quality, energy efficiency and cost savings, one stands above the rest: the Light Emitting Diode or LED. Battle of the Bulbs How do LEDs stack up against Compact Fluorescent Light (CFL) and traditional incandescent lighting? You be the judge. Who's the champ? When it comes to cost and efficiency, it looks like LED lighting is the clear winner, particularly in the Caribbean region, where most our procucee Tron Tossin tues onc many residents are burdened with high monthly electricity costs. In 2016, the Caribbean Energy Efficiency Lighting Project (CEELP)'s technical evaluation report showed that retrofits of public buildings and street lights could save partner governments between 30% and 60% in related energy costs. Even better, the transition to LED lighting aligns with the CARICOM Regional Energy Efficient bullding voce (CREEBC), which calls for the phasing out or Incandescent bulbs in tavour or energy efficient lighting. As part of the ongoing Energy Roadmap and Strategy (C-SERMS), the CREEBC is meant to meet the specific needs of Caribbean and other tropical nations by establishing minimum efficiency requirements for buildings in order to reduce exposure to climate and disaster risks.
LIGHTING & ENVIRONMENT In addition to being the safest and most cost-effective way to light your household, LED lighting is the best option for the environment. From carbon footprint reductions to ease of recycling to environmental impact, LED bulbs are definitely the green lighting choice. Climate Resiliency: LED lighting uses about 50% of electricity as fluorescent lighting. A global transition to LED light bulbs would reduce the global power demand by up to 3%, lowering global CO2 emissions by 3.5 gigatons between 2025 and 2050. That's reduction equivalent to getting ALL of the world's passenger cars off the road for one year. Within CARICOM, where about 90% of our electricity is produced from fossil fuels, such a transition would reduce demands on our increasingly strained national grids. This would free up capacity that can be used to enhance our ability to withstand and bounce back from climate impacts. Recyclability: Unlike CFLs, which create tons of electronic waste each month due to their inefficient design, LEDs are at least 95% recyclable and their lifespans (up to six times longer than CFLs) equate to less waste overall. Ecosystems: While LED contain NO mercury, CFLs unfortunately do. The majority of these glass bulbs are discarded into general waste streams, where they break and release toxic mercury vapors into the environment. The wind can carry the gas hundreds of accumulate in miles, it can bodies of Water, convert into methylmercury and enter the food chain. LIGHTING YOUR HEALTH & SAFETY Lighting is a key part of daily life. At home, at work, at school and everywhere else, we rely on illumination to go about our day-to-day business. However, we rarely put much thought into the source of our lighting and how it might be affecting our health. Whether we realise it or not, we interact with dangerous lighting every day in the form of fluorescent lighting. What are the Health Effects of Fluorescent Lighting? All fluorescent lighting contains mercury, a chemical that is nighly toxic humans even in small amount. particularly dangerous to infants, small children and pregnant women. Possible effects of mercury exposure include: Damage to the nervous, digestive and immune systems. Damage to the lungs, kidney, skin and eyes. Developmental impacts to young children and babies in utero. Where is Fluorescent Lighting Found? Fluorescent lighting is found in a wide variety of settings: • Homes • Schools • Child Care Centres • Offices • Stores • Healthcare Facilities And many more places. How Does Mercury Exposure Happen? Mercury exposure from fluorescent lighting happens when a bulb breaks. This is most likely to happen when bulbs are being replaced or discarded. If the mercury isn't contained or cleaned up immediately, it can evaporate and become an invisible, odorless, toxic vapor that is easily inhaled. 80% of inhaled mercury is absorbed by the body. Mercury vapor is heavier than air and therefore sinks to the tloor indoors. It is particularly dangerous to intants and toddlers who crawl, sit, walk and play close to the ground. Is there an alternative? Unlike Tuorescent lighting, Leb light bulbs pose no toxic heaith risks. Iney are mercury-free and therefore a safer alternative to fluorescent bulbs. LED light bulbs are also more energy efficient and cost-effective, making them the best choice for safe lighting.

Today we're ready to "Roll It" with the Queen of Soca herself! Born in Britain, Alison Hinds, The Caribbean Queen moved to Barbados at the age of 11 and fell in love with #Soca. She joined the popular band Square One at the age of 17, becoming the first woman to headline a Soca band. Then, in 1997, she became the first woman to win the Party Monarch and Road March titles at Barbados Crop Over with "Meantime". Hinds has paved the way for many women in the Soca arena with her success. She has also repeatedly declared her commitment to female empowerment, saying "We are wives, we are mothers, but we are so much more."
